Mohair lubbins

At various points during my teenage years, I would raid my mother's closet for things I could appropriate for my own use. A floor length red and black floral suspenderesque dress seemed worthy to wear over baby tees to the dances at my nerd camp, ruffley cravat blouses served for romantic, goth-y pirate looks, and a short sleeved baby blue mohair sweater worked well on pin-up-ish days, worn with the ever-present double row rhinestone festooned black velvet collar.

(aside: There was an RA at camp that sang this just like this in the talent show, a hottie in geeky black rimmed glasses way way way before they were universally trending, I'll tell you, got alllllllll the girls swooning. probably a big reason this is my favourite Nirvana next to Lithium)

or my most formative heroine in her Debut

Recently, this editorial put furry sweaters back in the forefront of my mind

and I started rationalizing whether I wanted to/should go ahead and buy the fluffy giant pine green Dries Van Noten mohair cardigan that was at the time on Yoox. I was also obsessed with pine green that week, so it seemed to kill two birds with one stone, but it was a size M, and knowing from some of my ebay-Dries or ebay-designer-goods-in-general experiences, it's not such a good idea for a petite person to try to 'make giant sizes work' sight unseen.

Imagine like this but with a zipper down a V neck front, and piney turquoise richness

On my second trip to a J. Crew store ever, earlier this year (I've only recently started that retail-gateway-drug) I happened upon this fluffy monstrosity, also a size M.

I tried so hard to love it in the dressing room, as it really gave me that Bjorky feeling, but it was so thick, heavy, practically felted, and at the same time badly fitting around the neckline that I couldn't convince myself to give it a home.

I then discovered, through the J. Crew grapevine that consists of obsessively poring over J. Crew fans' blog posts, the existence of this cardigan...
the Mohair Souffle in heather camel

I missed the chance to buy one secondhand, again I think it was an M but I probably would have bit if it wasn't already sold. I figured I would just keep an eye out, maybe it would pop up eventually. Old Navy also had a 'mohair blend' option which had the same fiber contents listed as the Mohair Souffle, but the colours were more on the brights side (which I considered, but never settled on).

Tonight, as C was at his football(soccer) game, I perused my 'Shop It To Me' account, with an eye out for camel coats and leather jackets. Luckily, I had also kept the sweaters category checked, because what popped up but this

Suffice it to say, I have now placed my first Yoox order ever. Beware of gateway drugs and enablers like Shopittome. And I'll soon be having a love affair with my sweater, going on wistful romantic walks like this...

yay! I love it! I am not always patient enough to wait for the right one, but oh this certainly is it! Wowee! What a delicious colour too!

(I bought the old navy mohair online on super sale, but quickly returned it, not worth it!)

d'oh, and now you've reminded me about the Bjork concert I won tickets to 6 years ago but didn't get the message until 5 minutes after it was too late to claim them...grrrrr...Hulk smash! Hulk lub Bjork...

OH MY GOODNESS, that sucks about the tickets... the elation! the disappointment! I'd die!

I've seen her live three times, and I would have gone every opportunity if my parents hadn't been so strict I couldn't dare to ask to go to a concert while I was still a teen and living at home.

AHHhhHHHH someone who relates!! Mine also can't handle beans... I don't know the official term for that one either.

I still buy things with buttons when I just love the item too much, but I have to change out when I get home before I can hug him... and when I can, I find shank buttons to swap in, because he's ok with those...

he takes issue with any little "things" that are loose. he does wear button up shirts, but must have a tie to cover them- also comes unhinged if one of them does too. haha. shhh!

Mine luckily has a casual-dress-code job, so lives almost completely button free (and yes, we avoid saying the term generally, sometimes they're referred to as 'the evil things'). But for weddings and such, he'll have me do up his shirt or suit coat, but we've now changed out to shanks on his shirts so those are safe. It's a little funny to watch him do them up though, he totally doesn't have the motion down of pushing both the fabric AND the fastener.

BTW, if your husband ever needs new dress pants, a company called Bonobos makes them with a very interesting fastener at the top, completely 'safe' -- C was quite happy to have found that resource.

I see we ride the same mental wave when obsessing over and eventually locking our missiles onto certain very particular purchases. I was dying for THEE perfect mohair sweater this winter too but I think having dreamt up one that probably has never existed made everything that was available subpar in my eyes.

I love your and Grace's comment interaction. You two seem like you would get along :) We could have a very giggly and totally random tea party.

xxxxx!
